"KOTO" Style Shinai
The koto style shinai has a straight contour. It's heavy presence is said to mimic the Japanese sword (shinken). It is favored among those that feel that the regular or tournament style shinais do not have enough "weight" behind it.
"MADAKE" Bamboo
Grown to a diameter of 8-12cm over 3-4 years, it is harvested between October and February. Having been grown in Japan where there are distinct 4 seasons with temperature variations, it is extremely durable and may allow you to hit that nice reaching men, or swift combination hits. Compared to the keichiku bamboo it is not as dense so it may get damaged quicker. However, over use it forms tiny hair like bamboo fibers that protrude from the surface instead of the bamboo simply cracking, so one can shave these fibers off the shinai and continue using the shinai. Periodic maintenance with the shinai oil and the shinai shaving knife will increase the life of your shinai.
